ABANG JOHARI ENCOURAGES USE OF SYNTHETIC TIMBER FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

KUCHING, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged building contractors in the state to explore the use of synthetic timber as part of Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy and its long-term strategy for sustainable forest management.

He said this alternative material could support both the construction industry’s needs and Sarawak’s environmental commitments.

“If you need timber to construct houses, there is also an alternative - synthetic timber with fibre. This can be used as an alternative for construction,” he said during his speech at the opening of the International Conference on Industrial Forest Plantation Research and Innovation 2025 here last night.

Although synthetic timber is made from a combination of timber fibre and other chemical products, which still results in some emissions, it remains a viable option with lower carbon intensity compared to traditional materials.

“While it does emit some carbon, as is the case with any industrial construction sector and public transport, the carbon production can be mitigated. Furthermore, carbon can still be absorbed by natural processes and scientific methods, such as through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technological means,” he said.

Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak’s forestry strategy focuses on conserving natural rainforests while strengthening plantation programmes to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials.

“Sarawak currently maintains 62 per cent of its landmass, or approximately 7.65 million hectares, under forest cover. Of this, 3.95 million hectares are gazetted as permanent forest estates, and more than 874,000 hectares of land, along with 1.2 million hectares of marine areas, are designated as Totally Protected Areas,” he said.

He added that relying solely on natural forests cannot meet these demands without risking significant degradation, emphasising the importance of well-managed forest plantations in reducing pressure on natural forests while contributing to innovation, climate resilience, and economic growth.

“Yes, we have our natural forests, but we must enrich our forests by planting more trees. This is where science comes in. We must invest in research to plant more trees within a shorter period and develop storage areas to absorb carbon, while simultaneously producing more oxygen,” he said.
