535 UMK KOTA CAMPUS STUDENTS AFFECTED BY FLOODS TO CONTINUE LEARNING SESSIONS ONLINE

KOTA BHARU, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- A total of 535 students at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Kota Campus are attending teaching and learning sessions online starting today, following floods that have hit the state.

UMK Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Prof Dr Arham Abdullah, said the decision was made after the campus area and residential colleges were affected by continuous heavy rain since last Thursday, thus making student movement difficult.

He emphasised that the online learning approach allows the teaching sessions to continue, while physical lectures will only be held when the situation returns to normal.

"As of now, a total of 527 students are still residing in the Kota Campus residential colleges and have been relocated to the upper floors to avoid the risk of flooding. Meanwhile, eight students living in rented houses around Pengkalan Chepa have been temporarily moved to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Padang Tembak.

"All affected students will attend their studies online, and an official memo has been issued to the faculties involved," he said when met by reporters after conducting a survey at UMK Kota Campus today.

Elaborating further, Arham said the university has activated a flood operations room and a 24-hour hotline across the campus since last Friday to ensure that the safety and welfare of the UMK community is taken care of.

According to him, the operations room serves to channel the latest information and assistance to students and staff on campus and in the surrounding areas.

"UMK also carries out regular monitoring of the student residential colleges to ensure all safety measures are taken throughout the flood period.

"Parents do not need to worry because the welfare of the students, including basic necessities, food, logistical support, and others, continues to be supervised by the university," he said.

He added that so far, the Jeli Campus and Bachok Campus have not been affected by the floods.

Yesterday, the UMK Kota campus and surrounding buildings were affected and submerged in water due to continuous heavy rain at a cautionary level.
