ICRC CALLS FOR COMPLIANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW AT THAI-CAMBODIAN BORDER

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called for all parties involved in the Thai-Cambodian border situation to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.

While urgently calling for restraint and de-escalation, the ICRC said these obligations are intended to limit harm to the population, particularly the loss of civilian life and damage to civilian objects, including essential infrastructure.

"Those who are wounded must be allowed to get the care they need," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ICRC said it will continue its bilateral, confidential dialogue with both parties while closely monitoring the humanitarian impact of the ongoing clashes.

"We stand ready to support National Red Cross Societies and concerned government agencies in providing necessary assistance to those affected," it said.

The call for de-escalation follows reports of a renewed military flare-up. According to international media reports, Thailand on Monday launched an airstrike along its border with Cambodia after renewed clashes erupted.

It is believed that the airstrike on Cambodian military positions was carried out in response to an early morning attack that resulted in casualties on the Thai side.
