PEMENANG CALLS FOR A NATIONAL EDUCATION COMMISSION TO ADDRESS BULLYING

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) hopes that the Ministry of Education (MOE) can establish a Special National Education Commission to study and recommend measures to address the problem of bullying and crime among school students and on school premises.

Pemenang president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff said MOE needs to establish a special commission comprising education experts and professionals in the country so that a comprehensive study and detailed data can be planned and implemented for the future of the country.

"The Ministry of Education needs to take seriously the issue of students who become violent and bully other students to the point of injury and death, and the incident occurred in a school premises that should be the safest place for children to study," he said in a statement today.

"Pemenang expressed this concern because it will have an impact on the development of the country's human capital in the coming years," he said in a statement today.

He said Pemenang and the Penang Malay Clubs Association (IKATAN) in an Education Convention on Dec 6 had formulated two main proposals, namely on the safety of children in schools and that the principles of Rukun Negara was found not appreciated by students.

Mohd Yussof also asked the Ministry of Education to review Civics lessons with the best pedagogical methods to teach school students about Rukun Negara because the principles of Rukun Negara is the spirit of racial unity.
