SHOPEE MARKS DECADE OF SUPPORTING MALAYSIAN MSMES

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- E-commerce platform Shopee’s decade-long presence in Malaysia highlights its role in building an inclusive digital ecosystem that empowers micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to grow sustainably.

In a statement, Shopee said Malaysia’s e-commerce landscape has evolved into an important growth engine for MSMEs, enabling businesses to expand their reach nationwide, improve efficiency and build long-term resilience through digital adoption.

“Since our founding in 2015, Shopee has been working towards building a digital ecosystem which is accessible to all, where businesses and communities can thrive,” said Shopee chief operating officer Terence Pang.

He said MSME sellers now account for more than 99 per cent of sellers on the platform across Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Brazil, collectively generating over USD270 billion in gross merchandise value over the past 10 years.

A key pillar of Shopee’s support for MSMEs is seller capability-building through Shopee University, which offers more than 1,500 online training modules, as well as in-person training sessions and workshops held across various states and cities nationwide.

The programmes, which have benefited 7.6 million MSME sellers, cover areas such as online store setup, digital marketing and campaign optimisation to help strengthen business fundamentals.

Shopee said this support proved critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, when movement control orders forced store closures and accelerated the shift to online channels.

As MSMEs scaled digitally, Shopee rolled out integrated tools to improve visibility and engagement, regardless of sellers’ marketing resources or expertise.

Through Shopee Live, launched in 2019, MSME sellers across the region recorded an average yearly increase of more than 300 per cent in orders generated via the livestreaming feature.

Short-form content adoption has also grown through Shopee Video, with MSME sellers uploading an average of 16 million additional videos each year.

Shopee’s Affiliate Marketing Solutions further enable MSMEs to collaborate with affiliates and key opinion leaders to reach broader audiences without large marketing teams.

Beyond commercial growth, Shopee has also supported Malaysian sellers in preserving local culture. One such example is Sutra Nurani, founded by traditional Malay music teacher Mohd Zulhafiz Jamaludin, which produces handcrafted traditional musical instruments.

The Selangor-based business moved online during the pandemic and has since sold more than 68,000 items to customers outside major cities, including Sabah and Sarawak, and expanded to Singapore via the Shopee International Platform.

Meanwhile, to help sellers meet rising demand for speed and convenience, Shopee has rolled out fulfilment solutions such as Shopee Instant Mart, Fulfilled by Shopee and Same Day Delivery, enabling faster services without heavy infrastructure investment.

“Today, as AI transforms commerce, we are excited to carry on innovating, creating solutions that empower sellers and nurture communities. Together, we have come a long way since those humble beginnings. I look forward to seeing our ecosystem continue to grow and adapt, moving onward and upward,” said Pang.
