PUTRAJAYA, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has allocated RM1.02 million to be distributed to 5,100 asnaf (tithe recipients) and fakir (hardcore poor) in the Federal Territories through its Nur Ramadan 2026 Programme.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the recipients - 3,300 in Kuala Lumpur, 1,500 in Labuan and 300 in Putrajaya - will each receive RM200 cash.

"Although it is a modest sum, this assistance will bring relief to families in need, and its success is dependent on implementing it efficiently and with integrity,” she said during the programme here today.

She added that the Nur Ramadan Programme reflected the government's commitment to supporting the community throughout the holy month.

"This programme is carried out through the collaboration of the Department of Federal Territories (JWP), Putrajaya Corporation, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Labuan Corporation and MAIWP to ensure aid is delivered in an organised and effective way,” she said.

Hannah presented cash assistance worth RM200 each to the 300 selected recipients in Putrajaya during the event.

She also presented a special contribution of RM5,000 to mosques and surau that are strategic partners of the Nur Ramadan Programme in Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, which play crucial roles as community institutions and support centres throughout the month of Ramadan.

Hannah, meanwhile, said that the 2026 Putrajaya Ramadan Festival, held from Feb 18 to March 19, provides economic opportunities to petty traders, invigorates community activities and makes full use of public spaces inclusively, in tandem with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

"This festival also supports Putrajaya's aspiration as a Low-Carbon Green City through cashless transactions, reduction of single-use plastics, use of reusable bags and campaigns to prevent food wastage,” she said.
