ZII JIA PLEDGES TO EXCEL IN EUROPE FOR 2024 WORLD TOUR SLOT

03/10/2024 05:39 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- National men’s professional Lee Zii Jia is determined to perform brilliantly in the tournaments in Europe to ensure he safely qualifies for the 2024 World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, this December.

The 26-year-old bronze medalist of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games stated that he will always take care of his physical fitness to ensure that he is able to achieve that goal.

"I will compete in all the tournaments (in Europe) because if you look at the ranking for the World Tour Final now, I am in sixth position and as long as my condition is okay, I will play.

"Of course, I hope I can repeat  what I have done last year in Finland and Denmark. Not just for my achievement, not just for my result but also is for my ranking points which I need to maintain," he told reporters after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Incentive Presentation Ceremony at the National Sports Council here, today.

At the tournament in Europe last year, Zii Jia emerged the champion of the Arctic Open 2023 as well as the runner-up of the Denmark Open 2023 while the Arctic Open 2024 will take place in Vantaa, Finland from Oct 8-13 and the Denmark Open 2024 will be held in Odense from Oct 15-20.

Only the top eight in all categories (singles and doubles) qualify for the 2024 World Tour Finals with each country allowed to send a maximum of two representatives.

Asked whether Team LZJ's management will reshuffle after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games recently, he stated that the matter has not been discussed in detail but assured to share any developments if that happens.

Meanwhile, national men's doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik said after a long break following the end of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in August, they are now devising a strategy to win the 2024 Denmark Open to restore self-confidence.

"Of course we want to win to get our confidence back and our best gameplay from the Olympics so we just see how the condition goes in Finland and Denmark," said Wooi Yik.

Aaron-Wooi Yik emerged champions of the Denmark Open last year.

The world number five was earlier forced to pull out of the 2024 China Open in Changzhou from Sept 17 to 22 after Wooi Yik had not fully recovered from a fractured toe suffered during the Paris 2024 Olympics semi-finals.
