HE SURE 'KEN’ GET US BACK TO THE TOP IN DIVING - BERTRAND

10/03/2025 04:31 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- New national diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee is expected to provide invaluable insight and a fresh perspective to the country's diving fraternity, thanks to his experience as a top-tier diver and international judge.

National diver Bertrand Rhodict Lises is optimistic that Ken Nee has what it takes to help the current batch of divers reach the top again and keep them abreast with the latest in diving techniques and regulations.

“I think Ken Nee’s appointment is a good thing... he has been to a lot of competitions before (as an international judge) and is up to date on World Aquatics’ proposed changes.

“So, if anything, he will be the first one to know and he can keep us updated. Plus, he has some big achievements under his belt as a former diver… hopefully, everything will go well for us,” Bertrand told Bernama when contacted.

Malaysia Swimming (MS) recently announced Ken Nee as the new technical director of the national diving squad, replacing Bryan Nickson Lomas, who resigned in December.

Ken Nee made history when he became the first Malaysian male diver to reach the Olympic Games final, finishing 10th in the men's 3-metre (m) springboard individual event at the 2012 edition in London.

He also won multiple Asian Games medals, namely in Busan 2002, Doha 2006 and Guangzhou 2010.

The 41-year-old, who retired in 2012, also has experience in coaching, having been the head coach of the Federal Territories diving team.

As an international judge, Ken Nee was one of the few Asians selected to officiate at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Bertrand is pleased with his progress, thus far, after making his debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 19-year-old ended his Paris 2024 campaign by finishing 25th out of 26 participants in the men's 10m platform preliminary round with 313.70 points.

The Sarawakian said he is trying to incorporate new difficulty levels in his dives as well as focusing on competing in the national trials in Bukit Jalil next month and forging a stronger partnership with Jellson Jabillin in the synchronised event.
