17/10/2025 02:58 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Mohammad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin came close to creating a huge sensation before settling for silver in the 2025 UCI Para Cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, early today.

The 28-year-old, competing in the men's 1-kilometre (km) time trial of the MC1 category, clocked 1:15.432 seconds (s) to finish just 0.25s behind gold medallist Ricardo Ten Argiles (1:15.182s). Ivan Ermakov of Independent Neutral Athletes took the bronze medal in 1:17.657s. (MC1 in para cycling is for athletes with the most severe impairment who compete on a standard bicycle.)

Mohammad Yusof Hafizi, who has suffered from a nerve problem since birth that results in the entire left side of his body being weak, had earlier broken the national record en route to the finals with a time of 1:14.117s.

"This success has paved the way for him to compete in and enjoy better success at the ASEAN Para Games in Korat, Thailand, and the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, in 2026,” said national para cycling coach Sallehudin Mohd Noh.

Mohammad Yusof Hafizi still has a chance to go one better when he competes in the 200m sprint on the third day of the Oct 16-19 championships.

Meanwhile, in the tandem team sprint event (MB/WB), the national combinations of Mohd Khairul Hazwan Wahab-Muhammad Khairul Adha Rasol and Nur Suraiya Muhammad Zamri-Farina Shawati Mohd Adnan finished fourth after clocking 52.729s to lose to team Great Britain (50.406s).

For the MC5 1km time trial event, national rider Zulhairie Ahmad Tarmizi ended up in 10th spot after clocking 1:08.571s in the qualifying round.
