NEW ZEALAND EASES REGULATIONS TO BOOST ADVANCED AVIATION INNOVATION

24/09/2024 06:09 PM

WELLINGTON, Sept 24 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- New Zealand is adopting a light-touch regulatory framework for advanced aviation, enabling innovators to test new technologies and ideas more freely, Science, Innovation, and Technology Minister Judith Collins announced Tuesday.

"Novel aviation technologies, such as drones and uncrewed aircraft, are set to revolutionise aviation, as well as have global impacts on communications, emergency management, and advancing science," Collins told the New Zealand Aerospace Summit in Christchurch.

The government is removing the requirement for innovators to have to go through the whole approvals process each time they tweak their technology, Collins said, reported Xinhua.

New Zealand aims to have built a world-class regulatory environment for aerospace-related business by the end of 2025, and position the country as a destination of choice for aerospace activity, she said.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown said restricted airspaces are being established where tests could be carried out to provide innovators with much improved flexibility while maintaining safety and separation from other aviation users.

The space sector alone is predicted to be worth NZ$1.69 billion to the New Zealand economy and has the potential to grow further, according to government statistics.

More than 700 industry insiders attended the two-day New Zealand Aerospace Summit. (1 NZ$ equals US$0.63)
