The High Court on Oct 3 is slated to sentence former Cabinet minister S. Iswaran and set a precedent for a provision that has not been used since Singapore’s independence.

Gerindra Party lawmaker Ahmad Muzani was unanimously elected on Wednesday as the new People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker for the next five years, strengthening president-elect Prabowo Subianto’s consolidation of power in the legislative institutions, already dominated by parties aligned with him.

 

2.INDONESIA SEEKS TO BAN CHINESE APP TEMU TO PROTECT SMALL BUSINESSES -- JAKARTA GLOBE

The Indonesian government is considering a ban on the Chinese online marketplace, Temu, which facilitates direct transactions between Chinese producers and global consumers, citing concerns it could harm local small and medium enterprises (SMEs), an official said on Wednesday.

 

THAILAND

1. DLT SUSPENDS LICENCE OF BUS OPERATOR AFTER TRAGIC INCIDENT -- THE NATION 

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has temporarily suspended the public transport licence of the operator of the tour bus that caught fire while transporting students in Pathum Thani province on Tuesday.

 

2. BANGKOK SAFE FROM FLOODS, PM SAYS -- BANGKOK POST

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has reassured the public that Bangkok will not be inundated by floods, as the current volume of rainwater is lower than it was in 2011, when a major flood occurred.

1.GOVT SETS MINIMUM MONTHLY WAGE AT US$114 -- VIENTIANE TIMES

The government has set a monthly minimum wage of RM475.78 (US$114) for private sector workers effective October 1 to help them overcome economic challenges. An additional RM171.11 (US$41) will be given to unskilled workers without formal education or training.  

 

2.LAOS SELLS CARBON CREDITS TO PROTECT FOREST -- VIENTIANE TIMES

Laos will start selling carbon credits in the international markets to create investment opportunities and protect forest carbon management. Authorities have also designated 35 per cent of the country’s total land area for the carbon credit scheme.

 

VIETNAM

1. VIETNAM UNHAPPY WITH CHINA AFTER FISHERMEN INCIDENT -- VIETNAMPLUS

Vietnam has expressed concern and disappointment over Chinese law enforcement over the poor handling of its fishermen and their vessels operating in the Hoang Sa archipelago. Several fishermen were injured and their boats were damaged in the incident on September 20.

 

2. VIETNAM IMPORTS RICE WORTH RM4.2 BILLION -- VIETNAM NEWS

Major rice exporter, Vietnam procured rice worth RM4.2 billion (US$1 billion) between January and September this year, the first time the country’s procurement hit the billion-dollar mark. The high imports of rice were for domestic production and growing consumption needs.
