KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- Former Foreign Minister Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar has underscored the importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in maintaining regional stability, describing it as a crucial platform for dialogue and cooperation among member states.

He highlighted ASEAN’s role as a mediator in diplomatic tensions, emphasising its non-alignment principle and consensus-based decision-making process.

While acknowledging the organisation’s challenges, he reaffirmed that its framework provides a necessary mechanism for peace and stability in Southeast Asia.

“ASEAN has always played a critical role in fostering regional security. Its strength lies in its ability to bring nations together despite their differences.”

“While there are limitations, the ASEAN way of diplomacy remains a valuable tool in ensuring harmony in the region,” he said in an interview with Bernama TV’s ASEAN Malaysia 2025: Dari Kuala Lumpur Ke Dunia (From Kuala Lumpur to the World) on Thursday.

Syed Hamid also addressed concerns regarding ASEAN’s response to geopolitical shifts, particularly about major powers such as the United States (US) and China, and their impact on Southeast Asia.

He stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality while advocating for policies that prioritise regional interests.

“ASEAN’s foreign policy should remain balanced, allowing engagement with both major powers without compromising the bloc’s unity and autonomy,” he added.

He emphasised the importance of economic cooperation within ASEAN to reduce reliance on external powers, highlighting diversification as key to mitigate risks associated with global power struggles.

The former minister also discussed Malaysia’s role within ASEAN, noting the country’s longstanding commitment to diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation.

He highlighted Malaysia’s contributions to various ASEAN initiatives, including economic partnerships and security collaborations, and emphasised ASEAN’s need to adapt to shifting geopolitical realities, particularly in an era of economic uncertainty and strategic competition.

“We must enhance our capacity to respond to emerging challenges, whether it be trade disputes, security concerns, or the evolving global order. ASEAN must not only be reactive but proactive in shaping the region’s future.

“ASEAN’s relevance depends on our ability to work together. Unity and cooperation are the keys to our continued success,” he said.

Beyond ASEAN, Syed Hamid who served as Malaysia’s foreign minister from 1999 to 2008, reiterated the country’s stance on international conflicts and the importance of diplomatic solutions in resolving disputes.

“Diplomacy remains our strongest asset. Malaysia has always advocated for peaceful negotiations, and that principle should continue to guide our foreign policy,” he said.

When asked about Malaysia’s approach to regional conflicts and humanitarian issues, he highlighted the country’s dedication to upholding human rights and international law.

He pointed to Malaysia’s past initiatives in facilitating peace talks and providing humanitarian aid as examples of its diplomatic contributions.

“We have always been a voice for justice and fairness in international forums. It is imperative that we continue to play an active role, whether in advocating for Palestine, addressing the Rohingya crisis, or supporting conflict resolution efforts in other regions,” he said.
