KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Japanese leading news organisation, Kyodo News, is looking to further expand its strategic cooperation with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) to enhance the reach and availability of Japanese news content for Malaysian and international audiences.
Managing Director of Kyodo News’ International Department Moriyasu Chikazawa, said the agency is continuously working to diversify its products to meet the evolving demands of global markets.
Citing its English-language service, Chikazawa said the agency is currently distributing about 2,000 English-language news items a month.
“We know that Malaysians understand English news, so we encouraged our English-language writers to produce more stories in English,” he told Bernama after attending a meeting with Bernama’s senior management at Wisma Bernama here on Monday.
Among Bernama’s senior officials who attended the meeting were Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
From Kyodo News, Senior Director of the International Department Ko Hirano and Chief Operating Officer for Indonesia Tomoko Nishikawa were also present.
During the meeting, both sides discussed opportunities to expand their collaboration to include deeper cooperation in digital and multimedia platforms.
Chikazawa expressed hope that strengthening the partnership with Bernama through news content exchange would further enhance both Malaysians’ and Bernama’s wider audience’s understanding of Japan.
After the meeting, Chikazawa and his delegation also visited Bernama Newsroom, Bernama TV and the Bernama Digital Media, where they were briefed on the operation.
Asked for his comment after the visit, he said he was very impressed with how Bernama understands the influence of new media and responds proactively to its evolving landscape.
“And even the fact checking system was given attention with the priority to give correct and right information to the citizens,” he added.
Kyodo News and Bernama began cooperating decades ago and renewed their Memorandum of Understanding in February 2025, paving the way for further collaboration.
Founded in 1945, Kyodo News is Japan’s leading news agency, emphasising Japanese and Asian news and content, with coverage ranging from political, economic and social developments to sports, arts and culture.
It has earned a reputation as Japan’s most reliable news agency through coverage that is independent of government and commercial interests.
Bernama was established as a statutory body under the 1967 Parliamentary Act.
