CYCLONE GEZANI DEATH TOLL IN MADAGASCAR RISES TO 59, 15 REPORTED MISSING

LUSAKA, (Zambia), Feb 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Madagascar continued to reel from the effects of Cyclone Gezani on Monday, with the death toll rising to 59 and 15 people reported missing, according to the country’s disaster management agency, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

The number of injured has climbed to 804, while 423,986 homes have been damaged.

At least 1,428 people have been displaced by the storm.

Additional figures released by the agency for five regions across 25 affected districts show that 27,756 houses were flooded, 49,129 buildings sustained damage and 25,044 homes were completely destroyed.

The affected regions include East, Analamanga, Analanjirofo, Alaotra Mangoro and Itasy.

Of the total deaths, 41 were recorded in Toamasina city, eight in Brickaville, three in Ambatondrazaka, and two each in Mahanoro and Toamasina II. Anjorozobe, Ankazobe, and Manjakandriana each recorded one death.

Relief efforts, including the distribution of food and medical supplies, are continuing in all affected areas following the government’s declaration of the cyclone as a national disaster.
