UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY CALLS FOR CEASEFIRE AND PEACE IN UKRAINE

25/02/2026 04:32 PM

NEW YORK, Feb 25 (Bernama-dpa) -- On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, through a resolution on Tuesday, called for an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace in the country, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

A total of 107 member countries voted in favour of the resolution in New York, with 12 voting against and 51 abstaining.

The resolution calls, among other things, for an "immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine and demands a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace" based on international law.

The UN Security Council also intended to address the issue on Tuesday.

UN Secretary General António Guterres had already called in advance for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, describing the war as a "stain on our collective consciousness."

Russia began an invasion of its neighbouring country on February 24, 2022. Tens of thousands of people have been killed or injured at the front and in attacks on Ukrainian cities, and millions have fled abroad.

Although Ukraine and Russia are now negotiating with the United States acting as mediator, there is no end to the fighting in sight.
