KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- As a sign of solidarity for fellow Muslims in Palestine, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) will hold nightly solat hajat (special prayers of need) at three of its main mosques, starting today until the end of Ramadan.

JAKIM director-general, Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, said in a statement today that the mosques involved are Masjid Negara, Masjid Putra, and Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, with the prayers to be held every night after Isyak prayers.

He said that Israel's latest airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the deaths of 404 people, including women and children, and injured 562 others, were a betrayal of the ceasefire agreement and a continued oppression of the Palestinian people.

"Let us unite in prayer to Allah SWT, especially during this blessed month of Ramadan, for the safety and victory of the Palestinian people who continue to suffer inhumane treatment," he said.

He added, "May Allah SWT grant our prayers for those fighting in His path during this month of mercy."

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim condemned Israel’s latest attacks on Gaza, which led to the deaths of eight humanitarian workers from the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM) in an airstrike last Saturday.

Describing the attack as a heinous and an indefensible act, Anwar said that Malaysia would continue to voice its opposition to international leaders and the global community.
