KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has been re-elected to two Governing Councils under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), namely the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation (CSAM) and the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP).
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said the elections were held during the 81st Session of the UNESCAP in Bangkok on Tuesday.
It said Malaysia is one of eight countries elected for membership to these two councils.
“Malaysia remains steadfast in its support for the work of both CSAM and SIAP, and will continue to actively participate in and contribute to the strengthening of their respective roles,” the statement read.
Malaysia, represented by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), was re-elected to the CSAM Governing Council for the 2025–2028 term.
“CSAM plays an important role in promoting technical cooperation among UNESCAP members and associate members. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge, research collaboration, and agri-business development in the field of sustainable agricultural mechanisation,” the statement read.
Malaysia has served on the CSAM Governing Council for two consecutive terms – from 2018–2022 and 2022–2025.
For SIAP, the Foreign Ministry said Malaysia, represented by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), was re-elected for the 2025–2027 term.
It said SIAP strengthens the statistical capacity of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, supporting the collection, dissemination, and analysis of data to inform economic and social development.
Malaysia previously served on SIAP’s Governing Council for the 2010–2012 and 2022–2024 terms, and has been a founding member of the institute since its establishment in 1970.
