BioInnovation Launchpad 2025 To Propel Bio Entrepreneurs To Global Market

09/10/2025 03:33 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- The BioInnovation Launchpad 2025 programme under BioXceed 2025 is expected to produce at least 10 high-potential bio-entrepreneurs capable of achieving Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) or BioNexus status, further strengthening the national biotechnology ecosystem by 2030.

A collaboration between Bioeconomy Corporation and the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), the initiative seeks to drive the commercialisation of local bio-based products and technologies to global markets, in line with the goals of the National Innovation and Commercialisation Expo (NICE 2025).

Bioeconomy Corporation chief executive officer Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak said the programme provides clear directions for graduates, researchers and entrepreneurs through comprehensive support including mentorship, market access, regulatory assistance, funding and other facilitation.

“Participants will not be left to compete alone but will receive end-to-end support to ensure their bio-innovations grow into sustainable, scalable businesses.

“This effort also supports the target of achieving five per cent of GDP by 2030 under the National Biotechnology Policy 2.0,” he said at the launch of BioXceed 2025, held in conjunction with NICE 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

The event was officiated by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.

Mohd Khairul said BioXceed participants will pitch their business proposals to investors, funders and venture capital firms during the Demo Day - BioInnovation Launchpad, where the top three winners will each receive RM60,000 in seed funding, while the Best Pitcher and People’s Choice award winners will each take home RM5,000.

Meanwhile, Chang said bioinnovation has become a key driver of national progress, covering areas such as food, medicine and sustainable environmental solutions.

“The role of agencies under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI), such as Bioeconomy Corporation and MTDC, is vital in ensuring that research and technological outcomes are translated into real impact for the people and the nation,” he said.

He said the collaboration between both agencies through BioXceed 2025 reflects a shared aspiration to advance the commercialisation of local technologies.

Chang noted that less than 10 per cent of university research outputs are successfully commercialised, due to challenges such as limited funding, lack of entrepreneurial skills and insufficient continuous mentoring.

“The BioInnovation Launchpad 2025, managed by Bioeconomy Corporation, is unique as it offers long-term support, unlike most entrepreneurship programmes which are short-term in nature,” he said.

A total of 10 participants from universities, startups and spin-off companies have been selected to join the programme, bringing forward 10 bioinnovation-based products with an estimated combined market potential of RM13 million, covering sectors such as healthcare, agricultural biotechnology, food security, bio-based food and the circular economy.
