ALOR SETAR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 36 students and four lecturers from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) have been stranded in Hatyai, Thailand, following floods in the city.
UUM deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), who is performing the functions of vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, said the group was in Hatyai to take part in the Thai-MYS Cultural Exchange Programme 2025.
“They are from the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA-UUM) and have been attending the programme since Monday. It is scheduled to run until Nov 30.
“So far, all students and accompanying lecturers are reported safe, and the university is coordinating the necessary steps to ensure their programme can continue smoothly once the situation improves,” he said in a statement today.
He said the welfare and safety of students and staff remain the university’s top priority and that UUM is continuously monitoring the situation.
Ahmad Martadha said UUM is also in close contact with the Malaysian Consulate in Hatyai to ensure assistance and support can be provided promptly.
He advised families of the students and staff involved to remain calm and to refrain from sharing unverified information.
“Updates will be provided from time to time. UUM is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all its students and staff, especially in unexpected situations such as this,” he added.
