RISING RIVER WATER LEVEL: APM STEPS UP MONITORING IN KELANTAN

KOTA BHARU, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) is fully focused on monitoring the levels of major rivers in Kelantan which have shown an increasing trend following continuous rain in the state since the first episode of the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) began last week.

APM chief commissioner Muhammad Abiddin Abd Rahman said close monitoring on the ground involving rescue agencies and technical departments is very important to ensure that immediate action could be taken if a critical situation occurs.

"Several major rivers in Kelantan are currently at levels that require continuous attention. The rain is continuing and this increases the risk of overflow, especially in low-lying areas," he said when visiting the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Islah temporary evacuation centre (PPS) here, today.

He said the first episode of the current heavy rains from MTL had affected several districts including Tumpat, Bachok, Kota Bharu and Pasir Puteh.

Commenting on the preparedness, Muhammad Abiddin said 1,200 APM officers and personnel have been activated to face any eventuality, in addition to 91 land and water assets such as fibre boats, combat boats and multi-purpose lorries being on standby.
