BANGKOK, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- National promising swimmer Tong Yu Jing created history on his debut by breaking the national record and claiming a bronze medal in the men’s 50 metres (m) freestyle at the SEA Games Thailand 2025 at the Swimming Pool, Sports Authority of Thailand here, tonight.
The 19-year-old clocked 22.48 seconds (s) to eclipse the previous national record of 22.91s set by Bryan Leong in the United Kingdom in May last year.
“I was hunting for the national record but didn’t expect the bronze. It’s my first SEA Games and my first bronze at this level, I’m really, really happy about it,” he told reporters when met after the final, here.
Singapore’s Mikkel Lee Jun Jie took the gold with a time of 21.92s while his compatriot Teong Tzen Wei claimed silver in 22.42s.
In the Men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, the national quartet of Khiew Hoe Yean, Terence Ng, Ananda Lim and Arvin Shaun Singh finished second in 7:19.50s, breaking the national record while narrowly missing gold to Vietnam, who touched in 7:18.67s. Singapore took bronze in 7:21.13s.
The new national mark smashed the previous record of 7:19.66s set by Hoe Yean, Arvin Shaun, Lim Yin Chuen and Tan Khai Xin at the World University Games 2025 in Berlin last July.
For the record, Phee Jinq En claimed the bronze in the women’s 50m breaststroke, giving the national swimming contingent its first medal yesterday.
