KOTA BHARU, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The level of installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Kelantan is still not comprehensive, especially involving private and business premises, although the technology has proven effective in helping prevent crime and investigations.

Kelantan police chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the results of a study conducted found that there was still a gap in terms of the installation of CCTV in certain premises, although the need is increasingly critical in efforts to strengthen public safety.

He said that from the study conducted, a total of 67 health premises, 145 educational institutions and 180 government administrative offices were identified as having CCTV, while for private premises, 241 health premises, 266 educational institutions and 577 business premises had the facility.

According to him, the installation of CCTV in mosques was also found to be high with 302 premises, exceeding the number in business premises, thus showing an imbalance in terms of security needs.

Commenting on crime statistics, he said that for the period from January to November, a total of 1,457 housebreaking cases were recorded, with only 37 cases involving premises with CCTV while more than 200 cases occurred in locations without the facility.

"For business premises, the number of cases is almost balanced between those with and without CCTV, while for government premises, most locations have been equipped with the facility," he said in a press conference after the December Monthly Assembly at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters, here today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff confirmed that a police officer from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at a District Police Headquarters here is being investigated after being suspected of molesting a woman in a car in Pasir Mas, last Wednesday.

He said the victim was the wife of a detainee and further investigations were being conducted under Section 345 of the Penal Code.

"The police officer is in his 30s while the victim is in his 20s," he said.
